Sewing the Vinyl, Wrecking My Home

A year and a half after moving back to Austin, I have finally begun *seriously* sewing again. The glorious stack of glitter vinyl I've owned for years is unpacked and getting hacked to bits.


After a few failed attempts at making phone cozies from vinyl, 1 tall drink, near tears - I googled "sewing with vinyl." Lots of good advice, why did I wait so long?!?

I chose the method of wax paper on top AND bottom of the fabric. Sigh, sigh, sigh, relief, relief, relief. For your entertainment, see the before (hideous twisted deformed thing), middle (wax paper just on top) and after - which you can see here.

On the dark side, it seems our kitty may have snorted up a bit of something from the pile of sewing and crafty goodness. We are experiencing sneezing fits.

The Vinyl Roller Foot Has Arrived

And it is glorious.
My 1970's Kenmore machine is what they call a "super high shank," you see. A vinyl foot was not made for the super-high shank. So I needed to get an adaptor to convert the super-high shank to a low shank and then acquire this lovely low shank roller foot. This is the result of 2 weeks of research. Victory is sweet.

Oregon! And the zip pouches ("zips").

We're in Oregon! We arrived last night after an all day in airplanes. Our hotel is AMAZING with a view of Mount Hood and downtown Portland.


On a crafty note, I had an impulse to sew a roomy pouch to carry my art supplies to Oregon. I used some IKEA fabric and blue twill lining, plus a thick clear vinyl layer to make it waterproof.

This was an experimental effort, but now that I've figured it out, I plan to add a set of these "zips" to the shop. We'll be back around the first of August, so By the 2nd week of August they'll be set to go!

I'm on the hunt for glitter vinyl for some upcoming projects as well. If anyone knows where to find a good selection of colors by the yard, let me know!

There's a New Bag in Town

I'm having a mini-obsession with vinyl. Here's the latest outcome of that particular obsession:

Waiting.

Ah, waiting. It's so hard! I'm waiting for my first etsy sale. And the self-doubt begins to creep in. So I'm occupying myself with projects.

First, I completed a little set of "enclosures" for the future-my-favorite-people-in-the-world who decide to buy a handmade bag. I have to admit that they are really cute. So cute that I had to take several pictures of them.



This is a jumbled bunch of glittery resin pendants from my 2nd round of resin casting. I'll post a more dignified picture of the good ones tomorrow.


Also, the afternoon sun has been cooking me in my little attic/loft/studio, so I put up a little curtain made of 6 stitched together vintage hankies. Much better.


Now, to begin my next set of bags: the "Michele" line. Cute little totes with a vinyl outside and polka dot inside. VINYL. The iron-on kind and I am itching to get started. Meanwhile, these little bags huddle together in an air-tight container, awaiting their new home. *Sigh!*
